Developers S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 forced to abandon gaming NFTs

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is a shooter with RPG elements in a post-apocalyptic setting and one of the most anticipated game “long-term construction”, which is scheduled for release in 2022.

Why S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 give up NFT?

On Wednesday, the Ukrainian studio GSC Game World, which is creating the game, announced that in the second “Stalker” game items and options in NFT format will be available for purchase. But those who were waiting for the game did not like the prospect.

Most gamers, writes Kotaku, consider NFT to be green (because of the high power consumption of computers serving the blockchain) and unethical (because it is a variant of “making money out of thin air”) technology. In addition, the situation when some advantage is available only to a limited number of players was considered by many to be a threat to the balance in the game.

One of the most popular comments on the news on Reddit about NFT in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 reads, “They literally didn’t have to do anything to keep me looking forward to this game, but they still managed to screw it up.”

The plans of the developers were to start selling in-game bonuses in cooperation with the NFT-platform DMarket, and to use the money received to improve S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. However, given the exclusivity deal with Microsoft, it is unlikely that GSC Game World is facing serious financial problems.

As a result, a post appeared on the Twitter account of the Ukrainian studio on Friday, in which the developers promised not to add anything related to NFT to the game.
